A DREAM TO FLY

The untold story of bessie coleman brought to life on stage

Inspired by the Life and Legacy of the First Black and American-Indian Woman Pilot

A one-woman play written and performed by

Madeline McCray

Fearless, ambitious, and powerful—Bessie Coleman was born on a dirt floor in Atlanta, Texas, in 1892. Even as a child, the scorching sun beating down on her back while she picked cotton, Bessie knew she was destined for something more. When she discovered her passion, she met racism and sexism head-on, declaring: "I refuse to take NO for an answer."

From Tribulations to Triumphs: Bessie's Story Must Be Told

Hey!I'm Madeline.

Who's that, I asked my friend when he first spoke her name to me in 1988. We were discussing the scarcity of meaningful roles for African American actresses at the time.

I was being advised to not depend on the industry, "an artist waits for no one, you create your own." Veteran actor, John Amos, went on to say, you should write a one woman play about Bessie Coleman, our first female Black pilot.

During my initial research I only found a one page article published in 1977 by Ebony Magazine after that the trail went cold.

The lack of information about this incredible pioneer aviatrix infuriated me. Bessie Coleman was licensed as a pilot in 1921—two years before Amelia Earhart—by the prestigious Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, yet hardly anyone knew her name. All I could think was, "Bessie Coleman's story must be told."

Eventually, I went to the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, where I found everything I needed to honor her legacy.

Sharing Bessie's journey is both a privilege and a passion—it fuels my creative soul. It also provides opportunities to inspire others to embrace self-determination, believe in their ability to overcome obstacles, and pursue their dreams with unwavering resolve.

Why bessie's story matters today

The world feels upside down. In these chaotic and uncertain times, we all need a reminder of our personal power. Bessie Coleman rejected racism and sexism, refusing to take 'no' for an answer when doors slammed shut in her face. She had a burning desire to fly—nothing could stop her. What's your dream?

This performance event is about:

  • Unshakable Determination – Refuse to accept limitations and persist despite obstacles.
  • Fearless Self-Belief – Trust in your abilities, even when others doubt you.
  • Resilience in Adversity – View challenges as stepping stones rather than roadblocks.
  • Lifelong Learning & Growth – Seek knowledge, adapt, and never stop improving.
  • Courage to Take Risks – Step outside your comfort zone and embrace the unknown.
  • Self-Reliance & Initiative – Create your own opportunities instead of waiting for permission.
  • Commitment to a Greater Purpose – Pursue goals that uplift and inspire others.
